Time Out New York

I really like this article--Michael Miller writes a mean interview.

Boston Globe... L.A. Times

It's a cloudless, sunny Sunday morning in Boston; the only noise outside my workroom window is the slow sputtery trickle of Friday's snow, melting, melting off the roof. I woke up to a pair of newspaper features about We Disappear that have made me happy and relieved: this feature in the Boston Globe and this review in the LA Times.

Ketchup Chips

Lately this blog has alternated between my favorite bands' YouTube videos and news about my forthcoming book. So today, here's a little diversion. I present to you one of my lifelong obsessions: KETCHUP CHIPS. Mmmmm.... Bet you didn't know there were so many brands.

Wasp Stings

It's odd, but sometimes it's the unexpected, out-of-left-field things that make me feel the greatest validation as a writer. For instance, I went through all of 2005 experiencing lots of joys & giddinesses & highs because of the release of the movie and everything related; however, even after the film festivals and reviews, the one tiny, strange, surprising instance that made me realize "Wow--the movie has sort of cracked the general consciousness" was when I saw the title of this New Yorker article about a sports stadium in Munich.

Now something equally unplanned and odd has happened: a band has named an album after something I wrote. Cursillistas, the brainchild of Portland, ME's Matt Lajoie, makes layered, hypnotic, ghostly music that I really love, and the new album, Wasp Stings the Last Bitter Flavor, takes its title from a line in the second chapter of my second novel In Awe.

(Pictured above: Matt Lajoie.) When In Awe came out in 1997, some of the initial reviews were less than enthusiastic about the description-overload sentences like the "Wasp" one, so now, a decade later, seeing the words used as this album's title is hugely flattering. I'm elated. And it's especially cool because I like the music so much.

We Disappear Trailer

I've spent the last few weeks working on a promotional video / trailer for We Disappear. Michael and I (and my HarperCollins marketing team and I) have been discussing the possible publicity options for writers, and I've been wanting to make something like this for a while; after a couple of potential collaborations fell through--collaborations with folks who know more about creating this sort of thing--I finally took the advice from the excellent Joseph G-L to just do it myself. So I did. The result is below. Thank you to Brent Covington for letting me borrow his movie camera; Apple for the super user-friendly iMovie; and the saintly Gordon Sharp of Cindytalk for granting me the use of his song "In This World." I'll post this on YouTube and my Myspace page and HarperPerennial's weblog, as well.
