New Zoe Woodbury-High Video

You might remember my entry about Zoe's video for "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out". Here's her new one, again directed by the wondrous David Meiklejohn.

Creepy, pt. 3: Puppets

Seriously-- for me, certain puppets qualify as profound, extreme horror, rocking me to the marrow of my bones. In the clips below, #1 disturbs me the most-- I can't even watch it-- and #2 scared the hell out of me when I saw it on TV when I was 11 or so.

and finally, Example 9 (too horrifying for me to even try and find a film of):

Creepy, pt. 2: Twenty Music Videos

Following up to that horror post from Halloween... tonight I've been searching out music videos that could fall into the "horror" category. Here are a handful, beginning with the most obvious choice for the category (it's always on everyone's "scary" list), and then including some things that, while not immediately fear-inducing, certainly have nightmarish images scattered throughout.

(1) Aphex Twin, "Come To Daddy":

(2) Skinny Puppy, "Worlock" (not for the squeamish):

(3) His Name Is Alive, "Can't Go Wrong Without You" (directed by those gods, the Brothers Quay):

(4) The Hitmen, "Bates Motel" (I was looking for this video for AGES since seeing it way back in 1985, and somebody finally posted it on YouTube recently... thank you, thank you):

(5) Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Y Control":

(6) Daft Punk, "Prime Time of Your Life":

(7) Squarepusher, "Come On My Selector":

(8) Interpol, "Evil":

(9) Metric, "Monster Hospital":

(10) Aesop Rock, "Coffee":

(11) Skinny Puppy (again), "Dig It":

(12) Leftfield & Afrika Bambaataa, "Afrika Shox":

(13) The Knife, "Silent Shout":

(14) Ultravox, "The Thin Wall":

(15), Einstürzende Neubauten, "Sabrina":

(16) Portishead, "Only You":

(17) The Horrors, "Sheena Is a Parasite":

(18) Nine Inch Nails, "Happiness In Slavery":

(19) Coil, "Tainted Love":

and (20) Aphex Twin (again), music for Chris Cunningham's Rubber Johnny:

70s NYC In Films

Since I was a kid, I've been obsessed with 1970s New York City. I used to go to the city library and look through issues of Variety to see what films were playing on Times Square. I read magazines to learn about Central Park and Studio 54 and NYU and Greenwich Village. I had a gigantic collection of disco vinyl albums, and later, NYC new wave. Often I wish I'd been born a decade earlier, and I'd moved to NYC in 1981 instead of 1991; many times I'll demand that friends who were there during those years tell me their stories. But I realize I likely wouldn't be here any longer if I had. Anyway, here are clips from some notable and/or notorious films set in New York, starting with Wait Until Dark in the late 60s and going through to the end of the 70s with exploitation horror like Maniac and, one of my all-time favorites, the finally-released-on-DVD Cruising. Note #1: There are pretty important spoilers in a couple of these clips. And Note #2: I've left out Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese movies, since those are too obvious (and, with the exception of Taxi Driver, aren't really among my favorites anyway). Now bring on the disco, the psycho killers, the heroin and coke, the glamour, and even, in the last clip, the poppers.
