Ten Creepy Scenes, pt. 1: Without Blood or Guts
In time for Halloween... if you know me, you know I'm a huge horror film fan (for evidence, see here, which to this date has the most number of hits of any entry I've ever posted). As much as I love most contemporary slasher films, I sure do wish there were directors out there that still made the creepy, power-of-suggestion kind of horror film from the past. Here are ten scenes that creeped me out without spillage of a single drop of blood:
(1) from The Changeling (dir. Peter Medak, 1980):
(2) from Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (dir. John Newland, TV, 1973):
(3) from Kairo (dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa, 2001):
(4) from The Spiral Staircase (dir. Robert Siodmak, 1945):
(5) from Lost Highway (dir. David Lynch, 1997):
(6) from Trilogy of Terror (dir. Dan Curtis, TV, 1975):
(7) from Communion (dir. Philippe Mora, 1989):
(8) from Onibaba (dir. Kaneto Shindô, 1964):
(9) from The Amityville Horror (dir. Stuart Rosenberg, 1979):
(10) from The Innocents (dir. Jack Clayton, 1961):

Leopard Slug
The "Adaptations" event went well. There were over 300 people there, I met Banks/Hoffman/Golden and some sexy college kids, and sold some books. There's still news to report, and I promise I'll break the silence soon. In the meantime, please watch this the following video... and watch all the way to the end:

Adaptations 2
This Thursday, October 11, Boston's local hot literary gurus Grub Street will host "Adaptations 2: Novels Into Film" at the Coolidge Theater in Brookline. From the press release: "Join distinguished authors as they read short excerpts from their novels, show the corresponding scenes from the film and discuss the "translation" from page to film." There's a little more information about the event here. Russell Banks... Arthur Golden... Alice Hoffman... and Scott Heim (yes, me). If you're in the neighborhood, please come and see me (a) blather on about the transition from Mysterious Skin novel to Mysterious Skin film; and (b) tremble and stammer nervously next to the godlike Mr. Banks.

Insomnia; Links
Have you ever been up too late, numb with insomnia, and Googled yourself--but instead of looking at the main entries, gone searching to the smaller, less-viewed pages? I did that just now. Here are some odd things I found:
(1) The place I was born, and where I set Mysterious Skin, made a "boring" list... (2) This comedian dude shares my name... (3) Those Suspiria rumors are still persisting... (4) My super-wonderful friend (and French translator of my novel) Christophe Grosdidier has translated another book... (5) Sometimes I can find really old interviews still floating around online... (6) I heart Scott McCabe... (7) Salt Lake City decided to keep Mysterious Skin in their libraries!

Procrastination
So, I've been lazy with this space--I should've posted news and pictures of my Galapagos trip; I should've reported on the recent 24-hour, 12-team-participating Scavenger Hunt I hosted; I should've updated news about the upcoming book. (Oh, and I also owe about 100 people emails, so huge apologies if you're one of those people.) Instead, I'll wait a little longer and do another interlude of music I've been listening to--some of it recent, some of it sort-of recent.
(1) LCD Soundsystem, "Someone Great":
(2) M83, "Sister (Part 2)":
(3) Liars, "Plaster Casts of Everything":

(7) Frightened Rabbit, "The Greys":
