MBV Rumors (Again)

My friend Tim just sent me more rumors about a My Bloody Valentine reunion (I've been hearing these kinds of things for years, but at last, this one sounds pretty legit).

Above: the band; and (still) my all-time favorite album. Feel free to ask me about the time I ran into Debbie Googe in a Brooklyn bar, or when I met Kevin Shields at the London Film Festival premiere of the Mysterious Skin film (Gregg had invited him, and he came--but our meeting was such a surreal and fidgety five-minute span, I can hardly remember it).

Olive Reader

My Galapagos report is coming soon, I promise. For now, I just wanted to give this link to a little promo for We Disappear on The Olive Reader, the blog maintained by the amazingly cool folks at my publisher Harper Perennial. When I was in NYC a few weeks back, I visited the Harper offices, and we made some little handheld-camera films to post online. I debated posting this, mostly because I seem pretty uncomfortable (and look weirdly pudgy and pink) in the film, but here you go:

(pause)

We're back from the Galapagos. To say we had an "amazing" week would be a monumental understatement. I'll post photos and a report later this week. Until then, here's a teaser for what will prove to be the soundtrack of my winter:

Galapagos

How's this for some exciting news: tomorrow Michael and I leave for a weeklong vacation, first to Ecuador and then, believe it or not, the Galapagos Islands.

About a year ago, to celebrate their respective retirements from academia, Michael's dad Abe and his stepmom Jane offered to take her two kids, his two kids, and their spouses or partners (that's where I come into the picture) on this trip. We figured we'd never get the chance to visit the Galapagos again, so of course we said yes.

We'll spend a few days in Quito (pictured above) before getting on the boat to cruise around the islands. The memory card in my camera holds 444 photos, and you can bet I'll be using that up before I return. See you next week!

R.I.P. Lee Hazlewood

From the internet: "LEE HAZLEWOOD died peacefully at his home outside Las Vegas, USA, after a three year struggle with cancer. He celebrated his 78th birthday earlier this month surrounded by family and friends from around the world. He passed away on August 4th, 2007, in Henderson, Nevada, and is survived by his son Mark, his daughters Debbie and Samantha, and his devoted wife Jeane."

Go here if you aren't familiar... and then go listen to the sublime "Some Velvet Morning" over and over and over.

Battles

I know this record has been out for a few months now, but I just want to report that it's currently making me more excited than almost anything else I've heard all year. Here's the fantastic video, which I've watched about 20 times nonstop tonight:

Battles, "Atlas"
