Ten Creepy Scenes, pt. 1: Without Blood or Guts
In time for Halloween... if you know me, you know I'm a huge horror film fan (for evidence, see here, which to this date has the most number of hits of any entry I've ever posted). As much as I love most contemporary slasher films, I sure do wish there were directors out there that still made the creepy, power-of-suggestion kind of horror film from the past. Here are ten scenes that creeped me out without spillage of a single drop of blood:
(1) from The Changeling (dir. Peter Medak, 1980):
(2) from Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (dir. John Newland, TV, 1973):
(3) from Kairo (dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa, 2001):
(4) from The Spiral Staircase (dir. Robert Siodmak, 1945):
(5) from Lost Highway (dir. David Lynch, 1997):
(6) from Trilogy of Terror (dir. Dan Curtis, TV, 1975):
(7) from Communion (dir. Philippe Mora, 1989):
(8) from Onibaba (dir. Kaneto Shindô, 1964):
(9) from The Amityville Horror (dir. Stuart Rosenberg, 1979):
(10) from The Innocents (dir. Jack Clayton, 1961):

Al Pacino and Sidney Lumet, working together, tend to make New York a living, breathing thing (which, of course, it always has been) in SERPICO and DOG DAY AFTERNOON. Almost any Sidney Lumet movie is worth watching, because almost any movie of his seems to understand New York. He directed THE PAWNBROKER and TWELVE ANGRY MEN, both or which are almost entirely set in one room but both of which capture the New York thing.

I'm standing behind the "(wo)man behind Winkie's" scene from 'Mulholland Drive.' And, although I think I mentioned it last year (in response to your "scariest scenes" post): the scene in 'The Shining' with the guy in the bear suit? A million times more frightening than the torrents-of-blood-issuing-forth-from-the-elevator scene!

Please keep those suggestions coming. There's so many things I saw as a kid that I constantly forget about. Later (tonight?) I'll post ten "gore fest" scenes...

I love, love, love The Changeling. I still need to buy a copy.
The opening of When a Stranger Calls (1979) is still a classic even though it's been copied and parodied to death. It scared the crap out of me when I saw it.
The Alamo Drafthouse showed Something Wicked This Way Comes as part of its Saturday Morning series this past Saturday. We didn't make it out to see it, but that's a good Halloween creepfest. I need to rent that one and watch it again.
