(Video Intermission) pt. 5: MOGWAI

Mogwai, from Scotland, are one of my most favorite, favorite, favorite bands. I often listen to them softly when I'm writing and very loudly when I'm driving. Once upon a time there were whispers that they might contribute to the soundtrack of, or even score, the Mysterious Skin film (while it's disappointing that they didn't, it's ultimately wondrous that Robin and Harold did). One of my coolest memories is seeing an early cut of a scene from the film--the character Neil running through the dark streets of NYC after a bad hustling pickup--that Gregg had synched with the most raucous moments of "Ratts of the Capital" (my favorite Mogwai song). Anyway... the band makes really great videos, too. Today I'm saluting them.

Friend of the Night (director: Woof Wan-Bau):

Hunted By a Freak (director: Plates Animation):

Stanley Kubrick (director: Brian Griffin):

Travel Is Dangerous (director: Monkmus):

Dial: Revenge:

Summer (live):

Tracy (beautifully directed by a fan from Mexico and posted on YouTube):

the trailer for Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait (for which Mogwai composed the music):

and, a fantastic tiny segment from a live video of their classic Mogwai Fear Satan, where, about 40 seconds in, you can get an idea of the ear-exploding dynamics of the band's concerts:
