If I Ruled the Academy...

My three favorite films of 2005:

Nobody Knows (dir. Hirokazu Koreeda), Oldboy (dir. Chan-wook Park), and, (duh!) Mysterious Skin (dir. Gregg Araki--dig the alternate poster, the designs of which you can see more if you snag the UK DVD).

Here are some images from all three:

The alternate poster for Mysterious Skin is GORGEOUS. Is it available anywhere?

I am an enormous cinephile (well, as much as one can be, living in rural Wisconsin), and wholeheartedly agree that the latter two films were amazing. I haven't seen Nobody Knows yet, but it's currently number 68 on my ridiculously long Netflix queue.

Did you happen to see the film Undertow (dir. David Gordon Green)? It sort of *loosely* revisits the themes of Night of the Hunter (another favorite of mine), but is, stylistically, much different. Check it out when you're not, you know, laboring over your novel ;)

Nobody Knows is such a sweet, sad film. But I saw all those films in festival during 2004 and included them on my oh four list. I think 2005 had bit of a dry spell, but then I didn't go to the cinema much.

scott, I love that you linked the Fancy Feast Web site to your last post. Cute cat. I've never been much of a cat fan because of my allergies, but I've learned to adore them more since my boyfriend's sister has four cats and I break down and pet them every time I visit.

So how about that squid-eating scene in Old Boy. That was memorable cinema. I thought that movie kicked ass, as well as Mysterious Skin. Never saw the third film, but I'll check it out.

How exciting that you are nearly finished with We Disappear. Your determination to finish it off is inspiring.

Hey Scott - did you catch the slate.com movie club discussion about best of 2005? Some wonderful words about Gordon-Levitt from A.O. Scott of the NY Times.
