$$ Danni & the Linzes $$

I almost forgot: if you've been paying attention to this blog at all, you know I'm a diehard reality TV fanatic. So the past couple of weeks of "season finales" has given my TiVo a bigtime workout.

So: SURVIVOR. I've gotta say, I was extremely happy with this season, and with the final three survivors. And Danni Boatwright, a fellow Kansan who's from the tiny town of Tonganoxie, wound up winning the million bucks. (Tonganoxie, by the way, is about 15 minutes from where I used to live, and my sister and friends and I spent a lot of time at the church thrift store there, "back in the day.")

I didn't love this season's Amazing Race as much as previous ones, but I was certainly happy with the outcome, in which the sweet but interchangeable Bransens and scripture-spouting Weavers were outrun by the sexy dimple-cheeked Linz Family. God, I'd kill to be on this show.

(And a P.S. that doesn't deserve an accompanying photo: if you watched The Apprentice, you were probably (a) not all that shocked with the initial decision, but (b) totally floored when Randal, whom I'd previously liked a lot, advised Trump NOT to also hire the runner-up, the newly crutch-less Rebecca. As my pal Mark Lewis told me, what Trump should have done was: first, listened to Randal's ignoble opinion, and second, promptly told him "You're Fired" and delivered the job to Rebecca.)

Okay, back to my own reality.

Hey, old Hashinger person here. I live on the North Shore -- isn't it funny to tell people around here that you lived in a state that they can't imagine really exists? Congratulations on the creepy book and the impending fortune. Your poem about the farmer dreaming of rain on his cattle still is a favorite.

I'm wondering if you were a fan of Project Greenlight? It's really the only reality show I've payed close attention to because my friend John Gulager won the contest. It was fun to see the making of a horror film, but they did treat John like shit up until the end. The casting director made me cringe when she tried to prevent John from casting his family (his father Clu was is an experienced actor, and has cult status from his role in return of the living dead).

of course, i inevitably respond to your posts on food and reality tv, what a dork. i'm not up on the current seasons, just the ones available on netflix, but the other day an "america's next top model" marathon kept me glued to the tv practically all day (a little humiliating). i also love "the amazing race" and "project runway."

Scott:

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to respond to an old post. I was at your reading at Washington University, and I just wanted to say that you did a fabulous job. Really, once you've written a novel that has been made into a Major Motion Picture, you don't have to apologize when you take a drink of water. But I was wondering, did that woman who introduced you compare you to Jean Genet? Maybe I misinterpreted that . . . I hope everything is going well with We Disappear. That damn article on Nerve, which I think is an excerpt from the novel--cleverly disguised as a short story--will only let premium members read it! Fix that! Cheers.
