Mark Beyer

This entry is to honor Mark Beyer, one of my favorite graphic artists. When I was in college I was obsessed with his book AGONY. I photocopied some of the images from the book and taped them to my Kansas University dorm room door. Much later he published DEAD STORIES. If you aren't familiar with Beyer, his art is primitive and angular and nightmarish and extremely weird, and his stories are brutal little narratives, usually of a paranoid pair named Amy and Jordan. Suicidal depression! Misanthropy! The existential misery of city life! And all of it hilarious. When I lived in NYC, the New York Press would often publish his strips, and last year Pantheon collected a bunch of these in a gorgeous hardbound book, AMY AND JORDAN. For the past couple of years we've been emailing, and he's a great guy. My dream is to someday collaborate with him.

I've managed to save up roughly $22615 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?

Cooincidentally, that sounds like an accurate summation of Gregg Araki's The Doom Generation.
I'm definitely going to check out the graphic novels.

You'll also like David Heatley if you like this guy. http://davidheatley.com/store.html. Definitely get his 'Deadpan' #2.
Also check out Kramers Ergot #5 for some great graphic work.

My favorite graphic artists or comic artists, whichever, are Edward Gorey and Angus Oblong. I'm sure you're familiar with Gorey, but have you ever seen any of Oblong's work? It's hysterical, dark, and very politically incorrect. Gorey's work is so terrific as well; I'm looking at my Edward Gorey calendar at my job right now. Each month has an image and text from his Evil Garden story. If anyone is unfamiliar with Gorey's work, check out the Gashlycrumb Tinies. Good stuff. Scott, I'm curious about Mark Beyer's work now. I'll have to check it out. Oh, have you ever seen the online cartoon called Salad Fingers. It's quite bizare, in a funny yet disturbing sort of way. Go to http://www.fat-pie.com and then find the link to Salad Fingers in the cartoons section. Watch all of the episodes. You'll crack up.
