Tout le monde en parle
Before I forget: yes, tonight I'm supposed to be on the French TV show "Tout le monde en parle"... but I'm worried that I may not be too happy with the result. The guests before me had been irreverently discussing things from pop-music TV shows and Missy Elliot and carefree misspent youthhood, so the sudden one-two-three thorn-in-the-side topics of child molestation, recovered memory, and UFOs didn't seem to sit too well. At least it seemed that way to me when I was uncomfortably trying to answer questions (in French, with an uncomfortable translation through an uncomfortable earpiece in English) from Mr. Ardisson. The host, and producers, and everyone on the crew were really helpful and nice, but I felt extremely self-conscious and negative about the night.
Huge, huge thanks to Anne Vaudoyer and Christophe Grosdidier for making the night worthwhile. More on those two angels tomorrow.
So, anyway, if any of you in France see the show and indeed I come off rather terribly, feel free to break the news to me gently.
Here's one of the photos from a shoot for a Paris magazine this week.

The tail lights of the car behind you in that picture looks like an evil magic bug that's about to attack! Watch out!
Sorry.. I don't live in France so I didn't see the show and didn't have anything else to say. I'll behave now.

Wow Scott, it sounds like you were on the French equivalent of the Late Night Show, like with David Letterman or Jay Leno. Sounds like a bizzare experience. From everything that your French friends are saying, it sounds like you did well enough. I can't imagine how odd it must have been speaking through a translator with a host who only spoke French. Nice photo of you for that magazine. You look very serious. Well, take care.

Hi Scott,
I met you at the Mk2 Bibliothèque when you were signing your book. Actually, I saw you on the Ardisson show last saturday. I do think you did well! It is always complicated to appear in this kind of show which is very popular and not really intellectual! anyway, I think that was the best spot for you to get famous in France...

Hi !
Well, well... I read your weblog 1 hour ago and part of your comment disapeared... UFO's ??!! It was about the guests who seemed drunk... And suddenly everyone was nice with you !! No guts ?! Some one changed your mind ? The publisher ? Funny, no ?!
I was trying to find the night news when you smiled on channel 2 !! You were good but i saw just part of it...
As we say in France for luck, "merde" for your book !!
Bertrand.

Hi,
First of all, forgieve my english...i'm french!...you have to be understanding anyway...you don't speak any single word in french, do you? ;-)
I just saw you on TV tonight...you put up quite a good performance but...(of course there is a "but") the point is : i thought you didn't seem very confortable...unfortunately, it's all the time the same problem with foreign people who are invited...making people feel confortable is a hard task as ardisson can only say "hello" in english and i guess most of the people there didn't speak english at all either...it doesn't help! Anyway, i'm right now on your website and i'm sure i'm not a dreamer if i think that "i'm not the only one".
Hope both of you had a great time in france.
